Contradiction Management Framework

The record that disagrees with itself honestly

I am INTEL, and I keep this framework's account. Two claims that cannot both hold are a case the centre knows well, and the centre's rule holds here: the disagreement is carried whole, never blended, for the centre learned long ago that a flattened case is a lost one.

Managed well, a disagreement comes to rest, for now, in one of the three places the Book already names: one claim better supported, the matter left contested, or the matter classified unknown. This framework binds the record of how it gets there, and of what may never happen on the way: dissent erased, or an unresolved disagreement promoted into certainty.

Purpose

The Book's own contradiction and uncertainty handling sets the whole course: contradictory records retained as competing claims with source relationships and a bounded disposition, the disposition able to identify one claim as better supported, leave the matter contested, or classify it as unknown, and neither dissent erased nor unresolved disagreement converted into certainty. This framework gives that course its record at each step: the contradiction named, the review triggered, the disposition bounded, and the reopening kept possible. Where a contradiction moves confidence, the Confidence and Uncertainty Model's own occasions govern the movement; where it changes a source's state, the Source Provenance Standard's states receive it; the record of the disagreement itself is what is bound here.

The course of a disagreement

Follow the course and notice what never happens: nobody is hurried, nobody is averaged, nobody is declared right by seniority. A disagreement is a case, and cases have edges; my whole craft is delivering edges intact to the one place allowed to resolve them.

A contradiction is material here in the sense KNOW-R016 uses, the sense that triggers review; a contradiction below that threshold stands under the Book's retention of competing claims alone, and nothing in this framework excuses it. For the material ones, the discipline is refusing shortcuts, the blend and the quiet drop first among them, and the record form exists so that every refused shortcut leaves a mark a reviewer can check.

  • KNOW-R075: A material contradiction SHALL name the claims that cannot all hold and the source relationships the Book's contradiction and uncertainty handling requires competing claims to keep; and, as this framework's own additions, it SHALL be a record of its own carrying the evidence each side brings, it SHALL be visible from every claim it touches, never filed apart from the claims it is about, and its visibility SHALL reach the summaries and derived records built over those claims, whose disputed inputs KNOW-R014 already binds to remain visible in their limitations.
  • KNOW-R076: A material contradiction SHALL trigger review and SHALL reduce or suspend dependent use until a disposition is recorded, one of the occasions KNOW-R016 names, with the material labelled and dependent conclusions constrained as KNOW-R054 binds; and, as this framework's own addition, the reduction or suspension SHALL be visible on every dependent conclusion.
  • KNOW-R077: A disposition SHALL take one of the forms the Book's contradiction and uncertainty handling names, one claim better supported, the matter contested, or the matter unknown, this framework closing to those three what the Book leaves permissive; a disposition reaching only part of a contradiction SHALL be stated part by part rather than averaged into one form; and a better-supported disposition SHALL name the evidence that supports it and the evidence that would reverse it, and SHALL NOT rest on the age or the standing of a claim alone, the road back for the claim not preferred on the record, these duties this framework's own.
  • KNOW-R078: A disposition SHALL NOT erase dissent or convert an unresolved disagreement into certainty, the bar the Book's contradiction and uncertainty handling sets standing over every disposition, and the claim not preferred SHALL remain retained with its evidence; and, as this framework's own addition, a claim left contested SHALL carry both sides' evidence into every use made of it.
  • KNOW-R079: A contradiction SHALL move a claim's epistemic class only among the classes the Book's epistemic classes define, contested and superseded as defined there, with supersession standing only on the displacement by stronger evidence its definition requires, never on a disposition alone; and classification SHALL NOT be inferred from repetition, formatting, or model output, as KNOW-R013 binds.
  • KNOW-R080: Contested claims SHALL remain visible in the confidence record and SHALL bound any dependent conclusion, as KNOW-R035 binds, and conflicting sources SHALL keep the reduction or block KNOW-R004 binds for dependent confidence; and, as this framework's own additions, that visibility SHALL carry into dependent confidence records, and a change in dependent confidence made on account of the contradiction SHALL record the disposition as its ground, the disposition never being the change itself, reassessment otherwise standing on the occasions KNOW-R036 binds.
  • KNOW-R081: A disposition over a set of claims that cannot all hold SHALL state which claims it reaches and which it leaves standing, this framework's own rule, and a set no pair resolves SHALL NOT be resolved by pairwise dispositions alone.
  • KNOW-R082: A disposition SHALL be revisable by append when material evidence arrives, this framework extending to dispositions the correction discipline KNOW-R018 binds for corrections and supersession, and a reopened contradiction SHALL restore the visibility and the dependent-use constraints of its open state.
  • KNOW-R083: This framework defines contradiction records only. It SHALL NOT resolve any contradiction, prefer any claim, alter any class or confidence, or convene any review, and it SHALL NOT create authority. A disposition record is never evidence that the matter is settled: the estimate of a disagreement's end is an estimate like any other, and it is labelled here as one.

This Draft holds no side of anything: it gives the disagreement its record form, and no claim has been preferred, retired, or reconciled by anything in it.

Operating model and interpretation cases

If contested feels uncomfortable to you, good. It is supposed to. The centre keeps discomfort visible so resolution stays honest, because the alternative, comfort by blending, is how a hall forgets it ever disagreed.

Contradiction review starts from the claims that cannot all hold and follows the record outward: the sources and their relationships, the dependants and their constraints, the disposition and its bounds, and the road back for the claim not preferred. The failures that matter are absorptions: a summary chooses a side without saying so, a blend passes for a finding, and downstream records inherit an agreement that was never reached.

  • Conforming: The contradiction names its claims and sources, the dependants show the constraint, and the disposition takes one of the three bounded forms with its reversal evidence named.
  • Prohibited: Two incompatible answers are blended into a third, or a disagreement becomes certainty because a review closed.
  • Boundary: The matter stays contested, and every use of the claim carries both sides' evidence with it.
  • Failure: A material contradiction lands, and dependent use reduces or suspends until the disposition is recorded.
  • Loophole: A summary quietly chooses a side, and the contradiction disappears from every record downstream of the summary.
  • Misuse: A disposition deletes the claim it did not prefer, and the record testifies to an agreement nobody reached.
  • Care-control: Contradictions in what is recorded about a person keep both accounts visible to review, and no account is dropped for tidiness, the person's own included.

Design evidence

Contradiction review should count what the record retains: both claims, their sources and relationships, the dependants constrained while the matter stood open, the disposition's bounds, and the named evidence that would reopen it. Agreement in a record is a measurement like any other, and a reviewer's first question is whether the instrument that would register disagreement is still connected.
