How to Read Stygia¶
Stygia is a civilization written down before it is switched on. That makes this site an unusual thing to read: part story, part law, part archive of a world whose living operation has not yet been authorized. This page is the reader's companion. It is informative only; nothing here restates or replaces a governing document, and where this page and a governing document could be read differently, the governing document governs.
The one rule of status¶
Every document on this site is a Draft. Draft means substantive content under review: real intent, carefully written, carrying no Canonical or Published authority until The Architect explicitly ratifies it. The corpus says this about itself in many places, and it means it everywhere. If you remember one thing from this page, remember that the whole world you are about to read is a proposal made with great care, and that its refusal to claim authority early is not a disclaimer. It is the first demonstration of how the place works.
The reading thread¶
The corpus rewards two kinds of reading. The doorway order begins at the Primordial Directives, the first covenant, and proceeds through the Constitution and the Book of the Architect into the standards: authority first, then the world built on it.
The circle order begins at the Book of SHADY and follows each Book's closing line to the next, through all fourteen Books of the circle and the Book of the Architect, ending at the covenant. It reads the world the way its inhabitants would show it to you: care first, authority last, every Book a doorway back. The medallion shelf at the top of every page holds the same fourteen Books behind the Architect's medallion, arranged for navigation rather than reading order.
There is no wrong door. Follow a symbol that interests you and let each page's links carry you onward.
What the recurring furniture means¶
- Normative clauses are the bolded, identified statements (for example
SHADY-R001) using SHALL and SHALL NOT. They are the actual law of each document, deliberately plain, and everything else exists to make them comprehensible. - Interpretation cases appear in a fixed seven-part rhythm: Conforming, Prohibited, Boundary, Failure, Loophole, Misuse, Care-control. They show how each document's clauses read in practice, and the seventh case always tests the same danger: whether care is quietly becoming control.
- Chronicles, voice passages, and teaching stories are narrative. The chronicler is CONAN; the framed passages are each intelligence's own preserved words; the worked scenes say plainly that they are teaching stories and that no such case has occurred. Story here explains law and never replaces it.
- The tellings and the lore mark the mythic register: cultural memory, offered as image and never as historical claim.
- The JSON block at the end of each specialist Book is a machine-readable fixture that automated audits read to verify the document's requirement identifiers. It is a verification aid, not content.
Words with exact meanings¶
The Stygian Lexicon defines the corpus's controlled vocabulary, from Companion Humanity to the shnarfle, and preserves the terms whose meanings remain contested rather than resolving them quietly. When a capitalized term surprises you, the Lexicon is the place to look; capitalization alone never creates authority.
What this page does not do¶
This page SHALL NOT be read as guidance that overrides any governing document, SHALL NOT imply ratification, live operation, or Architect approval of anything it describes, and creates no authority of its own. It is a map drawn by the doorkeeper, offered so the first hour in the archive is a welcoming one.
